Full of rustic character and wonderful variations in shape and patina, these antique French oil jars are beautiful examples of traditional French country pottery.
Originally made as practical storage vessels, these earthenware jars were used for storing and transporting oil. Their distinctive forms, with narrow necks and one or two generous carrying handles, reflect their utilitarian origins, while the rich green glaze gives each jar its individual character.
The glaze varies considerably from one piece to another. Some retain a deep glossy green surface while others have areas where generations of handling, use and age have worn away the glaze to reveal the warm earthenware beneath. Chips, marks, firing irregularities and surface losses are part of their history rather than imperfections to be disguised.
Each jar is individually shaped and no two are quite alike. Some have a single handle running from neck to shoulder, while others have two beautifully curved handles framing the neck. Displayed together, these differences create the wonderfully relaxed, collected appearance we particularly love in old French pottery.
Today these old oil jars make striking decorative objects. Their sculptural shapes work beautifully on an antique table or console, on open shelving or simply standing alone where their colour and patina can be appreciated.

Condition
These are genuine antique utilitarian vessels and show considerable evidence of their age and original use. Each jar has its own combination of glaze loss, chips, surface wear, firing imperfections, marks and historic knocks.
This natural wear is an important part of their character and gives every jar its unique appearance. Please study the individual photographs carefully when choosing your piece.
These jars are sold as decorative antiques. We do not recommend them for food use and cannot guarantee that they are watertight.
Why We Love Them
It is difficult to reproduce the surface of genuinely old glazed pottery. Years of use have created layers of colour and texture, from areas of glossy deep green to patches where the glaze has worn away completely.
We also love the handles. The large sweeping single handles and wonderfully sculptural double-handled examples give these jars a particularly strong silhouette, even before you notice the beautiful old glaze.
Styling Tip
These oil jars need very little styling. Place one on an old wooden table, console or kitchen shelf and allow its shape and patina to become the focus.
They look particularly good grouped in twos or threes, mixing single and double-handled examples and varying the heights. If using one with foliage or branches, place a watertight container inside rather than filling the antique jar directly with water.
