A 19th-century Spanish Fajalauza lebrillo bowl, hand-painted in cobalt blue with a traditional central floral and foliate motif surrounded by a repeating decorative border.
Originating from Granada in southern Spain, Fajalauza pottery is recognised for its distinctive hand-painted decoration and rustic glazed earthenware. Lebrillos were traditionally produced as practical household vessels and are now collected as decorative examples of historic Spanish pottery.
The cobalt blue decoration has been freely applied by hand, with variations in the brushwork, glaze and form reflecting the traditional methods used to make these pieces. The naturally aged surface, firing marks and irregularities are characteristic of handmade earthenware of this period.

Why We Love It
The traditional cobalt floral decoration and repeating border give this bowl the distinctive character associated with Fajalauza pottery. Its compact proportions make it an easy antique ceramic to incorporate into an existing collection.
Styling Tip
Display upright on a dresser, console or shelf using a suitable plate stand, or hang on the wall amongst a collection of antique Spanish and Mediterranean ceramics. The cobalt decoration works particularly well with natural timber, rustic furniture and other blue and white pottery.
