A 19th-century Spanish Fajalauza lebrillo bowl, hand-painted in cobalt blue with a central stylised flower and scrolling foliage, surrounded by a bold repeating decorative border.
Originating from Granada in southern Spain, Fajalauza pottery is recognised for its distinctive hand-painted decoration and rustic glazed earthenware. Lebrillos were traditionally made as practical household vessels and are now collected as decorative examples of historic Spanish pottery.
The freely painted cobalt decoration, irregular form and variations in the glaze reflect traditional methods of production. An old crack has been repaired with three metal staples, a traditional method of repairing ceramics and an integral part of the history and character of this piece.

Condition
Good antique condition with one old repaired crack secured with three metal staples.
The crack runs from the rim towards the base and the three metal staples remain clearly visible. There is age-related glaze crazing and wear, small chips and losses around the rim and firing imperfections consistent with the age and handmade nature of the bowl.
Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
Why We Love It
The strong cobalt decoration and repeating border give this bowl a distinctive graphic quality. The old metal staple repair adds another element to its history, demonstrating how useful and valued pieces of pottery were repaired and retained rather than discarded.
Styling Tip
Display upright on a dresser, console or shelf using a suitable plate stand, or hang as part of a collection of antique Spanish ceramics. Its cobalt decoration works particularly well alongside other blue and white pottery, rustic furniture and natural materials.
