An exceptional Venetian writing desk dating from around 1850, combining graceful Italian craftsmanship with wonderfully decorative later hand-painted Chinoiserie scenes. Elegant from every angle, the decoration extends across the writing surface and all four sides, making this a piece designed to be admired rather than simply placed against a wall.
The finely painted scenes are filled with delicate figures, birds, flowers and foliage, reflecting the European fascination with Chinoiserie that had influenced decorative arts for generations. Rather than faithfully reproducing Eastern design, Chinoiserie was a distinctly European interpretation, creating an imagined and romanticised vision of the East.
The softly aged palette of cream, blue, rose, green and muted gold works beautifully with the elegant form of the desk. Slender curved legs give it a wonderful lightness, while painted borders and decorative flourishes frame the individual scenes and draw attention to the craftsmanship throughout.
Two discreet drawers are incorporated beneath the writing surface, providing useful storage without interrupting the graceful lines of the piece. Its proportions also make it wonderfully versatile.
