A 19th-century Spanish Fajalauza lebrillo bowl, hand-painted in cobalt blue with a central stylised floral and foliate motif surrounded by a freely painted looping decorative border.
Originating from Granada in southern Spain, Fajalauza pottery is recognised for its distinctive hand-painted decoration and rustic glazed earthenware. Lebrillos were traditionally made as practical household vessels and are now collected as decorative examples of historic Spanish pottery.
The cobalt decoration has been freely applied by hand, with irregular brushwork, variations in the glaze and the individual form reflecting traditional methods of production. The naturally aged surface, firing marks and areas of wear contribute to the character of the piece.

Condition
Fair antique condition with a large repaired crack.
The crack has previously been repaired with glue rather than traditional metal staples and the repair is clearly visible. There is also one hole to the reverse fitted with a wire for hanging.
There is age-related glaze wear, crazing, small chips and surface losses together with firing imperfections and natural variations associated with handmade pottery of this age.
Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the condition description.
Why We Love It
The freely painted cobalt decoration and looping border give this bowl the distinctive character associated with traditional Fajalauza pottery. The signs of age and previous repair form part of its history as a practical piece of Spanish earthenware.
Styling Tip
Display upright on a dresser, console or shelf using a suitable plate stand, or use the existing hanging arrangement to display it as part of a collection of antique Spanish ceramics.
