Exquisite Egyptian Fayoum Handmade Small Bowl With Palm Tree with a stylised pattern of a palm tree handcrafted by artisan potter Hakeem Nakhlateen.
Hand thrown earthenware bowl from Egypt 9 cm diameter x 6 cm high
This
delightful Egyptian pottery is handmade in the small oasis village of
Tunis in Fayoum using traditional methods and local materials such as
clay from the Nile Valley in Aswan.
Long forgotten ancient enamelling
techniques which had disappeared since the 13th century were
reintroduced by a Swiss-born potter, Evelyne Porret and her husband, who
opened the Fayoum Pottery School & Workshop in the 1980s.
Tunis village is now full of small artisan owned pottery workshops producing
these beautiful pieces that can only really be described as individual
works of art.
Each piece reveals the skills and talent of each
artisan in a subtle harmony of patterns and colours, a free and naïve
interpretation of the surroundings, mainly inspired by the fauna and
flora of the oasis.
“loola k-kasuura ma-kaanit il-faxuura" - "were it not for breakages, there would be no potteries"
